Brainchild (2018)
Chad's latest album "Brainchild" is an acoustic guitar album that blends a variety of styles, from fusion jazz, folk and world music. It his his most refined and accesible iteration of the "Perpetual Harmony Concept", a complex, textural rhythmic motive defined in the harmony. Instrumentation includes guitar, string ensembles, french horn, electric bass and both traditional drums and ethnic percussion.
The inspiration for "Brainchild" came from Chad's need to create a new genre of Jazz that was both accessible to a wider audience, while still maintaining a high standard of refinement, and complexity.
Improvisation at the highest level is always a cornerstone of Morris' work, and "Brainchild" is no exception. The guitar solos on tracks like "Stitch in Time" are some of Chad's best work. Additionally, the use of complex meter, 7/8, 6/4, and 9/8 time adds an unconvential rhythmic aspect to the work. "Brainchild" is currently "unreleased" to any digital markets at this time, but you can hear it right here.
Latin Soul (2010)
This is Chad's first internationally released album. It is a "straight up" Smooth Jazz album. Chad plays all instruments on these recordings including, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, sax, keyboard and drums. Tracks such as "Freedom" and "Springtime" feature some of Chad's most mind blowing guitar solos ever recorded.
The "Latin" element of the album is realized in the acoustic guitar tracks, while the "Soul" element is realized in the electric guitar tracks--a textbook smooth jazz sound. The album is still in rotation on radio and television music channels today, and showcases the limits of what one can do with the electric jazz guitar.
Ascension (2014)
This is the first, most raw and unapologetic iteration of Chad's new genre of music utilizing what he has named the "Perpetual Harmony Concept". There are many things going on here, notably, the use of the Pythagorean Temperament (432hz tuning). This tuning system is a direct upper valence octave of the Schumann Resonance (7.8hz), the frequency of the Earth's magnetic field. Additionally, this temperament is nearly perfectly in tune with the Earth and nature itself. It is also easier on the ear and synergizes with and represents the entire full spectrum of the overtone series.
The "Perpetual Harmony Concept" is a thematic rhythmic motive which utilizes what Chad calls "engines". These are independent melodies, usually 16th, or 32nd notes that flamboyantly outline a chord. Some works have up to 3 engines harmonizing with each other to create textural depth. These engines are accompanied by thinly voiced chords and all these elements work together to provide a dense harmonic bed for which a simple, tuneful choral like melody is placed. Chad's tendency for combining complexity and simplicity in his later compositions was first realized here, with this work.
Axis Mundi (2016)
"Axis Mundi" was another 432hz work written shortly after "Ascension", as an extension of the "Perpetual Harmony Concept". This feature continues in "Axis Mundi", but not so brazenly. The net effect of the "engines" is created by 3 or more voices playing less complex material--each voice cannot stand on its own but works together with the others to achieve its harmonic complexity and a similar textural depth that the "Ascension" compositions showcased.
The result is a rhythmic textural element in the harmony that is less ostentatious, while still illustrating the vibrance of the "Perpetual Harmony Concept". Simply put, the harmony is always rhythmically active for the majority of the composition.
Additionally, this work is singularly influenced by themes from the ancient world, megalithic monuments, lost civilizations and their knowledge, unexplained phenomena and Archaeoastronomy.
Shine (2013)
"Shine" is another Smooth Jazz work with heavy world music influences. Percussion instruments from Indonesia, North and West Africa, Turkey and South America were used in the produdction of this album. Tracks such as "Realization" showcase a blend of African and Turkish percussion, one of Morris' favorite combinations. Other synergies of ethnic percussion can be found throughout this work. Chad plays all instruments on these recordings, and showcases some beautiful chord progressions, captivating melodies and tasteful guitar solos with both the electric and acoustic guitars.
The roots of Chad's new genre of music using the "PHC" can be realized in some of the compositions in this work. An example is "Loom of Life", which contains similar rhythmic motives found in the "Axis Mundi" and "Ascension" albums. Conversely, there are also straight forward textbook Smooth Jazz tunes throughout the album such as "Eyes on the Road", "Grooveline" and "Picking Up", of course all adorned with high execution guitar solos.
Student of Beauty (2017)
"Student of Beauty" was the last example of the "Perpetual Harmony Concept" before the "Brainchild" album. This album also featured a tasteful iteration of this rhythmic motive and paved the way for the compositional style of "Brainchild". Chad's inspiration for this album was of course beauty--physical beauty, natural beauty, and the individual aspects which work harmoniously to create what humans perceive to be beautiful.
This is an unreleased work, and only a sample. It contains around 11 tracks and is a work in progress. The final version will be accompanied by a wonderful piece of artwork Chad will himself create. Morris works on this project from time to time, as he continues taking copious notes on beauty and how to conceptualize it through music.
